Nioh 3 Beginner Build Guide
Complete Nioh 3 Beginner Build guide with optimal stat allocation, equipment choices, skill selections, and combat tips for easy difficulty samurai gameplay.
Beginner Build Overview
The Beginner Build is specifically designed for players who are new to the Nioh series or action RPGs in general. Every choice in this build prioritizes survivability: high Constitution for maximum HP, heavy armor for damage reduction, and three defensive Onmyo buffs (Steel, Protection, Rejuvenation) that make you significantly harder to kill. The goal is not to kill bosses fast — it is to survive long enough to learn their patterns.
The sword is chosen as the primary weapon because it is the most balanced option in Nioh 3. Its Mid Stance has good range, speed, block stability, and dodge distance. There is no critical weakness to exploit your inexperience. The spear as secondary gives you a safe long-range poke for enemies you have not learned yet — you can keep your distance and chip away until you feel confident enough to close in.
This build is explicitly designed as a stepping stone. Once you are comfortable with Ki Pulse timing, stance switching, and boss patterns, you can respec your stats into a more specialized build like the Katana Build or Lightning Sword Build without losing any progress. Think of this as training wheels that still deal respectable damage — you are not gimping yourself, just giving yourself a larger margin for error while you learn the game's mechanics.
Stat Distribution
* Target stats at level 150. Adjust based on your current progress.
Constitution at 30 provides the largest HP pool possible in the early game. This is the single most important stat for beginners because it means you can survive an extra hit from most bosses. Heart at 30 gives strong Ki for the sword and a solid maximum Ki pool for combo strings. Courage at 25 keeps Ki recovery healthy. Stamina at 25 lets you wear medium-heavy armor at A-rank agility. Strength at 20 adds some physical damage. Magic at 10 is the minimum needed to equip Steel Talisman, Protection Talisman, and Rejuvenation Talisman — three defensive spells that make a massive difference in survivability.
Equipment
| Slot | Item |
|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Sword |
| Secondary Weapon | Spear |
| Armor Set | Warrior of the East |
| Guardian Spirit | Kato |
Warrior of the East armor provides Ki recovery at 6 pieces, which is valuable for beginners who tend to burn through Ki by blocking too much. Kato guardian spirit is the best all-around choice for new players — melee damage bonus, Ki recovery, and a straightforward fire burst attack with no complicated mechanics. The Spear secondary gives you a safe option for any enemy you have not learned to fight yet — keep your distance and poke until you understand the moveset.
Skills
- Flux — Ki on stance switch during Ki Pulse (learn this first)
- Sword Ki — recover Ki during sword combos
- Living Water: Heaven — Ki Pulse while dodging in High Stance
- Ki Pulse: Earth — Ki Pulse while dodging in Low Stance
- Shadow Sword — gap-closing attack from Mid Stance
Playstyle Tips
- 1.Prioritize Constitution and Heart in the early game — HP and Ki are the two resources that determine whether you survive or die
- 2.Always activate Steel Talisman before entering a boss fight. The defense increase is equivalent to wearing armor several tiers above your current level
- 3.Learn Ki Pulse timing on regular enemies first. Tap R1 after your combo finishes — the blue glow that appears on your character is your Ki Pulse window
- 4.Use the Spear secondary against any enemy that scares you. Its range lets you learn attack patterns from a safe distance before you commit to sword range
- 5.Do not worry about optimizing damage in your first playthrough. Surviving and learning mechanics is far more important than kill speed
- 6.If a boss kills you repeatedly, try summoning help through the Torii Gate or Ochoko Cup system. Co-op is available for every mission
- 7.When you are comfortable with Ki Pulse and stance switching, consider respeccing into the Katana Build or Lightning Sword Build for more damage
- 8.Quick-Change Scroll from Ninjutsu is your most important single skill. It saves you from one death per use — always have it active
