Nioh 3 Katana Build Guide
Complete Nioh 3 Katana Build guide with optimal stat allocation, equipment choices, skill selections, and combat tips for easy difficulty samurai gameplay.
Katana Build Overview
The Katana Build is the quintessential Nioh 3 Samurai experience. It focuses entirely on the sword's balanced moveset and Heart-based scaling to deliver consistent, reliable damage without relying on elemental buffs or Ninjutsu tools. What you lose in flashy elemental damage, you gain in simplicity — there are no buffs to manage, no timers to track. You just fight.
The sword is the most versatile weapon in Nioh 3. Mid Stance has fast horizontal slashes with good range and block stability. High Stance delivers powerful overhead cuts for punishing openings. Low Stance gives you the quickest attacks and best dodge distance for evasive play. Learning when to switch between all three is the path to mastering this build, and the Ki Pulse → Flux stance switch mechanic means you recover Ki while switching, keeping your offense seamless.
This build is distinct from the Lightning Sword build because it invests those Magic points into more Heart and Courage instead, giving you a larger Ki pool and faster Ki recovery. You hit slightly less total damage per swing (no lightning element), but you never have to stop fighting to refresh a buff. For players who want to focus purely on sword technique and not worry about buff management, this is the cleaner choice.
Stat Distribution
* Target stats at level 150. Adjust based on your current progress.
Heart at 50 is this build's identity. It maximizes Sword scaling for raw physical damage and gives you the largest Ki pool in the game. With this much Ki, you can execute full combo strings with stance switches and still have Ki left to dodge. Courage at 30 ensures fast Ki recovery so your downtime between combos is minimal. Constitution at 20 gives a safe HP buffer. Stamina at 20 lets you wear medium armor at A-rank agility. Dexterity and Magic are minimal at 5 each because this build does not use Ninjutsu or Onmyo beyond basic scrolls.
Equipment
| Slot | Item |
|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Sword |
| Secondary Weapon | Dual Swords |
| Armor Set | Warrior of the West |
| Guardian Spirit | Kato |
Warrior of the West provides attack speed at 6 pieces, which directly benefits the sword's already-fast moveset. Kato guardian spirit is the best general-purpose spirit for melee builds — it provides a passive melee damage bonus, increased Ki recovery, and a strong fire-based burst attack. Dual Swords as secondary give you an even faster attack option for situations where you need rapid hits instead of precise single strikes, and they scale with Skill as a secondary stat.
Skills
- Flux II — gain bonus Ki on stance switches during Ki Pulse
- Sword Ki — recover Ki during sword combos without stopping
- Living Water: Heaven — Ki Pulse on dodge in High Stance
- Morning Moon — counterattack after a perfect block
- Iai Quickdraw — charged burst damage from sheathed stance
- Shadow Sword — fast dash attack for gap closing
- Night Rain — multi-hit High Stance finisher
Playstyle Tips
- 1.Heart is your primary stat — every point increases both your damage and your Ki pool. There is no wasted investment
- 2.Mid Stance is your default stance for almost every fight. Fast attacks, solid block, decent dodge — it covers everything
- 3.Switch to High Stance when an enemy is staggered or recovering for maximum damage. Iai Quickdraw during a stagger window deals massive burst
- 4.Practice the Ki Pulse → Flux rhythm: attack, Ki Pulse, switch stance, attack. This keeps your Ki near full while dealing continuous damage
- 5.Low Stance is for evasion-heavy fights. Its dodge distance is the longest, and attacks come out fast enough to sneak in damage between enemy combos
- 6.Morning Moon (perfect block counter) is one of the highest-damage single moves for the sword. Practice the timing against human enemies who attack predictably
- 7.This build has no elemental damage, so you rely on raw physical DPS. If a boss is particularly tough, consider switching to the Lightning Sword setup for that fight
