Nioh 3 Odachi Build Guide

AMediumSamurai

Complete Nioh 3 Odachi Build guide with optimal stat allocation, equipment choices, skill selections, and combat tips for medium difficulty samurai gameplay.

Odachi Build Overview

The Odachi Build is Nioh 3's answer to the classic greatsword archetype. It maximizes raw physical damage per hit by stacking Strength for weapon scaling and Stamina for heavy armor. Where faster builds kill through combo volume, this build kills through sheer individual hit power — a single High Stance overhead can take 20-30% of a boss's health bar during a damage window.

The core playstyle is deliberate and positional. You wait for an opening, deliver one or two devastating swings, then Ki Pulse and reposition. The odachi's long reach means you can hit many enemies from a range where shorter weapons would whiff, and its wide Mid Stance sweeps can stagger entire groups of regular enemies in a single swing. Heavy armor provides hyper armor that lets you tank through lighter attacks without flinching, turning trades in your favor.

This build differs from the Purity Odachi by focusing on pure physical damage and maximum tankiness instead of elemental damage. Without Purity Talisman upkeep, your gameplay is simpler — no buff management, just positioning and timing. The Obsidian Samurai set and Atlas Bear guardian spirit push your raw damage and grapple damage to the maximum, making this the build of choice for players who want to feel the weight of every swing.

* Target stats at level 150. Adjust based on your current progress.

Strength at 45 is the build's primary damage stat, providing the highest Odachi scaling. Stamina at 35 is equally important — it lets you equip full heavy armor while maintaining A-rank agility (under 70% weight). Dropping below A-rank ruins your dodges and makes the build feel sluggish. Constitution at 30 gives a large HP pool for tanking hits that slip through. Courage at 25 provides Ki recovery, which is critical because the odachi consumes massive Ki per swing. Heart is minimal at 15, compensated by the large Ki recovery from Courage.

Obsidian Samurai set increases melee damage at 4 pieces and adds break (guard damage) at 6 pieces, which helps the odachi stagger enemies and break through blocks even faster. Atlas Bear guardian spirit increases grapple damage significantly and provides a strength bonus — since your primary win condition is staggering enemies into grapple range, this spirit directly amplifies your core damage loop. The Spear secondary provides reach for situations where even the odachi feels too slow, and it scales with Strength as a secondary stat.

Skills

  • Flux II — critical for Ki recovery on stance switch
  • Moonlit Snow — powerful multi-hit combo in High Stance
  • Crashing Waves — wide sweeping crowd control attack
  • Ki Pulse: Heaven — dodge-cancel Ki Pulse in High Stance
  • Odachi Mastery — passive damage increase
  • Twin Moons — two-hit combo starter in Mid Stance

Playstyle Tips

  • 1.Invest heavily in Strength — it is the primary Odachi scaling stat and directly governs your damage per swing
  • 2.Check your equipment weight before every mission. Staying under 70% (A-rank agility) is mandatory. Drop a heavier armor piece if you need to
  • 3.High Stance is for boss punish windows only. The damage is enormous but the commitment is long — never use it speculatively
  • 4.Mid Stance sweeps are your default for exploration and regular enemies. The wide arc staggers groups and costs less Ki than High Stance
  • 5.Moonlit Snow in High Stance is your highest-damage combo. Save it for when a boss is staggered or in a long recovery animation
  • 6.Atlas Bear boosts grapple damage, so prioritize depleting enemy Ki for grapple opportunities. A grapple from this build can take 30-40% of a boss's health
  • 7.Heavy armor hyper armor lets you tank through light attacks without flinching. Use this to your advantage by trading with weaker enemies instead of dodging
  • 8.The Spear secondary gives you safe poke options against bosses that punish the odachi's slow startup. Do not be afraid to switch weapons mid-fight
