Complete Nioh 3 Tonfa Tank Build guide with optimal stat allocation, equipment choices, skill selections, and combat tips for medium difficulty samurai gameplay.

Tonfa Tank Build Overview

The Tonfa Tank Build exploits the Tonfa's unique defensive identity. Unlike other fast weapons that rely on evasion, Tonfa has the best block frames of any weapon in its weight class and unique guard-point moves that let you attack and defend simultaneously.

The core mechanic is Ki destruction. Tonfa's Pulverize skill and Demon Dance follow-ups deal massive Ki damage to blocking enemies. Against human bosses, this build consistently breaks their guard within 3-4 combo strings, opening them for devastating final blows. Against yokai, the rapid multi-hit nature of Tonfa attacks builds up elemental status effects faster than almost any other weapon.

Grace of Takeminakata provides the defensive backbone. Its set bonus reduces Ki consumption while blocking and increases the window for perfect guard, making the counter-attack playstyle extremely forgiving. Paired with a Constitution/Courage-heavy stat spread, this build can face-tank attacks that would kill lighter setups.

Tonfa Tank shines against aggressive human bosses where blocking and countering is safer than dodging. It is weaker against large yokai with grab attacks that bypass guard entirely — for those encounters, switching to Mid Stance dodge is necessary.

* Target stats at level 150. Adjust based on your current progress.

Constitution at 40 provides a large HP pool to survive chip damage through blocks. Courage at 35 maximizes Ki recovery — essential since blocking consumes Ki continuously. Stamina at 30 lets you wear heavier armor without being over-encumbered, boosting your effective toughness. Heart at 25 increases your Ki pool. Strength at 20 supports the Tonfa's secondary scaling. The remaining stats are minimal since this build doesn't use Ninjutsu or Onmyo heavily.

Grace of Takeminakata's reduced block Ki cost is the build-defining set bonus. Without it, sustained blocking drains your Ki too quickly against combo-heavy bosses. Atlas Bear guardian spirit provides a flat Constitution bonus and a powerful melee burst counter. Heavy armor with Toughness A rating ensures you don't get staggered during block recovery. Sword as secondary gives a balanced option for situations where Tonfa's short range is a liability.

Skills

  • Pulverize — core Tonfa Ki damage skill, guard-breaks human bosses
  • Demon Dance — follow-up combo with i-frames during animation
  • Kannagi — Tonfa guard-point attack, blocks while dealing damage
  • Flux II — stance switch Ki recovery during combos
  • Ki Pulse: Earth — block-cancel Ki Pulse for seamless defense

Playstyle Tips

  • 1.Pulverize is your bread-and-butter. Use it after every blocked enemy combo to drain their Ki while they're recovering
  • 2.Demon Dance after Pulverize gives you i-frames. Use this against bosses who counter-attack immediately after their combo ends
  • 3.Kannagi's guard-point is active during the attack animation. You can literally attack and block at the same time
  • 4.Against yokai with grab attacks, switch to Mid Stance and dodge instead of blocking. Grabs bypass guard entirely
  • 5.In Low Stance, Tonfa attacks are the fastest in the game. Use Low Stance combos to apply elemental status effects rapidly
  • 6.Atlas Bear's burst counter is melee-range. Time it carefully — the reward is massive Ki damage to the enemy
  • 7.This build is weakest against ranged enemies. Close the distance quickly using High Stance dash attack
