Nioh 3 Guardian Spirits Guide

Guardian spirits are supernatural companions that grant passive bonuses, elemental affinities, and a powerful Burst Counter ability. Choosing the right spirit is essential for maximizing your build's damage output and survivability. This guide covers all 9 guardian spirits available at launch.

How Guardian Spirits Work in Nioh 3

Every guardian spirit in Nioh 3 provides four passive bonuses that are always active as long as that spirit is equipped. These range from flat damage increases to elemental accumulation bonuses and stat boosts. The passives apply regardless of what weapon you are using, so pick a spirit whose bonuses complement your build.

Each spirit also has a Burst Ability that you can activate by pressing R2+Circle (or the equivalent on your platform) when your Anima gauge is full. The burst ability varies by spirit — some deal damage, some provide buffs, and some create defensive barriers. The type of the spirit (Feral, Brute, or Phantom) determines how your Burst Counter works, which is separate from the burst ability.

You can equip a primary and a secondary guardian spirit. Only the primary spirit grants its burst ability and Burst Counter type. The secondary spirit provides half of its passive bonuses. Switch spirits freely at any Shrine with no cost.

Guardian Spirit Types — Burst Counter Comparison

Your spirit type determines your Burst Counter style. This is one of the most important combat mechanics in Nioh 3 — pick a type that matches how you react to enemy attacks.
Feral

Forward dash through the attack. Fast activation with i-frames. Best for aggressive players who want to counter and immediately follow up with a combo.

Brute

Tank the hit and counter with a powerful strike. Slower but deals Ki damage to the enemy. Best for heavy-weapon users who can afford to trade hits.

Spirits: Saoirse, Atlas Bear

Phantom

Backstep dodge with a delayed counter projectile. Creates distance and is safe on reaction. Best for ranged/caster builds and cautious playstyles.

How to Choose the Right Guardian Spirit

The most important factor is the Burst Counter type. If you prefer aggressive play and want to dash through attacks, pick a Feral spirit. If you are a heavy-weapon user who trades hits, pick a Brute spirit. If you prefer safe, reactive play or are a caster, pick a Phantom spirit.

After choosing a type, match the element to your build. Lightning builds benefit from Raiken's lightning passives. Water builds pair with Mizuchi. Onmyo casters should pick Genbu for the flat Magic bonus. For general-purpose melee, Kato covers the most ground with its straightforward damage and Ki recovery bonuses.

Remember that your secondary guardian spirit also contributes passive bonuses (at half effectiveness). A common strategy is to pair an offensive primary spirit with a defensive or utility secondary. For example, Raiken primary for lightning damage with Genbu secondary for elemental defense.
