Nioh 3 Ninjutsu Guide

Master the art of the Ninja with our complete Ninjutsu guide. From Dexterity scaling and skill selection to poison builds and stealth techniques, everything you need to dominate as a Ninjutsu user in Nioh 3.

New to Ninjutsu? Even if you are not building a full Ninja, investing 15 Dexterity for Quick-Change Scroll is one of the best survival tools in the entire game. Every build benefits from it.

Ninjutsu Overview

Ninjutsu is one of three magic systems in Nioh 3, sitting alongside Onmyo Magic and Samurai Skills. Where Onmyo focuses on elemental spells and buffs, Ninjutsu provides a toolkit of throwable weapons, status effect tools, stealth abilities, and self-buffs that reward a more tactical approach to combat. Ninjutsu skills are governed by the Dexterity stat, which determines both your Ninjutsu Capacity (how many skills you can equip at once) and your Ninjutsu Power (the damage dealt by thrown weapons like shuriken and kunai).

Ninjutsu pairs naturally with the Ninja combat style, which provides Mist Step for repositioning, enhanced aerial combos, and evasion-focused defense. However, Ninjutsu can supplement any build effectively. A Samurai-style player who carries Quick-Change Scroll and Power Pill gains enormous survivability and damage without committing heavily to Dexterity. The system is flexible enough to serve as either your primary damage source or a utility supplement.

Ninjutsu skills are learned from the Ninjutsu skill tree at any Shrine, costing Ninjutsu Locks (earned from proficiency with Dexterity-scaling weapons). Once learned, you assign them to your shortcut bar. Each skill has a limited number of uses that recharges when you rest at a Shrine. Unlike Onmyo Magic, Ninjutsu has no Soul Core interaction — all Ninjutsu tools come exclusively from the skill tree.

Dexterity Scaling & Capacity

Dexterity is the core stat for Ninjutsu users. It controls three things: your total Ninjutsu Capacity (how many skill points you can equip simultaneously), your Ninjutsu Power (a damage multiplier for all thrown weapons), and the scaling damage of Ninja weapons like Kusarigama, Claws/Talons, and Hatchets.

Dexterity LevelNinjutsu CapacityPower MultiplierRecommended For
10 (base)6 points1.0x (base)Non-Ninjutsu builds (skip entirely)
15-2010-12 points1.2xUtility dip (Quick-Change + Power Pill)
25-3016-20 points1.5xHybrid builds (full utility toolkit)
35-5022-28 points1.8x-2.0xDedicated Ninja builds
50+28+ pointsDiminishing returnsMin-max pure Ninjutsu only

The first soft cap is at 30 Dexterity, where you gain roughly 20 capacity points — enough for Quick-Change Scroll, Storm Kunai, a Catwalking Scroll, and a couple of additional tools. Most hybrid builds should aim for at least 30 Dexterity. The hard cap at 99 Dexterity provides diminishing returns past 50, so dedicated Ninja builds typically stop at 50 and invest remaining stat points elsewhere.

Each Ninjutsu skill has a capacity cost ranging from 1 to 5 points. Powerful skills like Quick-Change Scroll cost 4 points, while simpler tools like Medicine cost only 1. Planning your loadout around your available capacity is essential. Higher Dexterity also directly increases the damage of thrown weapons: a Storm Kunai at 50 Dexterity deals roughly double the damage of one at 15 Dexterity, making Ninjutsu Power a significant damage source for committed Ninja builds.

Ninja weapons (Kusarigama, Claws/Talons, Hatchets) all scale well with Dexterity. If you are investing 30+ Dex for Ninjutsu, consider using one of these weapons to get double value from your stat allocation.

Best Ninjutsu Skills

Not all Ninjutsu skills are created equal. Below is our tier ranking of the most impactful Ninjutsu skills, based on endgame viability and general usefulness across all build types.

Suppa Scroll2Invisibility for stealth runsB-Tier

Storm Kunai is the premier offensive Ninjutsu tool. The rapid-fire burst deals significant Ki damage to enemies, making it excellent for breaking an enemy's guard or finishing off a staggered boss. At 50 Dexterity with Ninjutsu Power bonuses on your accessories, a single Storm Kunai burst can deal upwards of 2,000 damage while stripping away a quarter of a boss's Ki bar.

Quick-Change Scroll is arguably the single most valuable Ninjutsu skill in Nioh 3. When activated, it places an invisible marker. If you die while the scroll is active, you are automatically revived mid-air above your death location with roughly 30% HP. This gives you a second chance against any boss or dangerous encounter. The 4-point capacity cost is steep, but the insurance it provides is unmatched. Most veteran players consider it mandatory for progression content.

Quick-Change Scroll must be activated before you take lethal damage. Get into the habit of using it at the start of every boss fight and dangerous area. The buff lasts until you die or rest at a Shrine.

Poison & Paralysis Builds

Ninjutsu's unique strength compared to Onmyo Magic is its access to two powerful status effects: Poison and Paralysis. While Onmyo specializes in elemental Confusion setups, Ninjutsu excels at applying these debilitating conditions that can trivialize even the toughest encounters.

Poison

  • Deals sustained damage over time (2-3% max HP/sec)
  • Reduces enemy healing and recovery speed
  • Applied via Snakebite Shuriken or poison weapon coatings
  • Lasts 15-25 seconds depending on enemy resistance
  • Stacks with other status effects for combined pressure

Paralysis

  • Completely freezes enemy for approximately 3 seconds
  • Allows free damage during the stun window
  • Applied via Paralysis Groundfire or paralysis weapon coatings
  • One application per accumulation buildup
  • Devastating when combined with high-damage combos

The core Ninjutsu boss-killing strategy combines both effects: apply Paralysis first to freeze the enemy for free hits, then apply Poison for sustained damage while you continue attacking. Paralysis Groundfire placed in the boss's path combined with a Paralysis weapon coating can trigger a freeze within seconds of the fight starting. During the stun window, switch to a Poison-coated weapon or throw Snakebite Shuriken to layer on damage-over-time.

For gear, prioritize weapons that scale with Dexterity (Kusarigama, Claws, Hatchets) and look for the Untouched Ninjutsu armor special effect. This gives a percentage chance to not consume a Ninjutsu use when activating a skill, effectively extending your limited supply of shuriken and traps. At 30-40% Untouched Ninjutsu (achievable across multiple armor pieces), your Ninjutsu tools last significantly longer per Shrine rest.

Paralysis Groundfire is a trap that must be placed on the ground before the enemy walks over it. Place traps during boss transitions or while the boss is locked in a long animation for guaranteed activation.

Stealth & Backstab

Ninjutsu provides the only true stealth system in Nioh 3. Two scrolls form the foundation: Catwalking Scroll eliminates the sound of your footsteps so enemies cannot detect you by audio, and Suppa Scroll makes you visually invisible. Used together, they create near-complete stealth that lets you bypass or assassinate enemies at will.

Stealth Mechanics

  • Catwalking Scroll: Silences your movement. Enemies will not react to your footsteps, even when running. Duration: 60 seconds at 30 Dex.
  • Suppa Scroll: Grants visual invisibility. Enemies cannot see you unless you attack or take damage. Duration: 45 seconds at 30 Dex.
  • Backstab: Approach an unaware enemy from behind and press the attack button for a devastating backstab that deals 5-8x normal damage. Most regular enemies die in a single backstab.
  • Stealth Kills: Backstab kills performed while in stealth do not alert nearby enemies, allowing you to chain eliminations through a group.
  • Limitation: Bosses always detect you regardless of stealth buffs. Stealth is strictly a tool for clearing levels and bypassing trash mobs efficiently.

Stealth is particularly valuable for exploration runs where you want to collect items, find Kodama, or reach a specific objective without fighting every enemy along the way. Combined with Tiger Sprint for movement speed, a stealth Ninja can clear levels in a fraction of the time it takes a combat-focused build. This makes Ninjutsu especially attractive for farming runs in New Game Plus where you already know the layouts.

Ninjutsu Build Tips

Whether you are dipping into Ninjutsu for utility or committing to a full Ninja build, here are the key guidelines for getting the most out of the system.

  • Minimum Viable (15-20 Dex): Invest just enough for Quick-Change Scroll and Power Pill. This is the most efficient Ninjutsu investment and works in any build. Total capacity cost: 6 points, easily covered at 15 Dexterity.
  • Hybrid Build (30 Dex): The sweet spot for players who want full utility alongside a Samurai or Onmyo main build. At 30 Dex you can equip Quick-Change, Storm Kunai, Catwalking Scroll, and Power Pill simultaneously. Pair with any primary weapon.
  • Full Ninja (50+ Dex): Commit to Kusarigama or Claws as your primary weapon. Stack Untouched Ninjutsu on every armor piece that allows it (aim for 30-40% total). Equip the full toolkit: Quick-Change, Storm Kunai, Snakebite Shuriken, Paralysis Groundfire, and Catwalking Scroll.
  • Untouched Ninjutsu: This is the single most important passive effect for any Ninjutsu build. It gives a percentage chance to not consume a use when activating a Ninjutsu skill. Without it, you run out of tools too quickly between Shrine rests. Prioritize this on armor rolls above almost everything else.
  • Ninjutsu Power Bonus: Found on accessories, this stat increases the damage of all thrown weapons (shuriken, kunai, groundfire). At 50 Dex with two Ninjutsu Power accessories, Storm Kunai becomes a legitimate damage source, not just a utility tool.
  • Combat Style Pairing: The Ninja combat style synergizes perfectly with Ninjutsu. Mist Step for repositioning, aerial combos for follow-ups after Paralysis stuns, and enhanced evasion all complement the Ninjutsu playstyle. However, Samurai style works fine too — the Ki Pulse recovery is valuable when you are pausing to throw projectiles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Dexterity level should I aim for in Nioh 3?

30 Dexterity minimum for adequate Ninjutsu capacity and solid thrown weapon damage. 50 Dexterity for a dedicated Ninja build with Kusarigama or Claws. Past 50, returns diminish sharply so additional points are better spent elsewhere unless you are min-maxing a pure Ninjutsu setup.

Is Ninjutsu good for beginners in Nioh 3?

Yes. Quick-Change Scroll alone makes Ninjutsu worth investing in for any build. It automatically revives you once when you die, which is invaluable while learning boss patterns. The utility tools like Tiger Sprint and Medicine are also beginner-friendly and require minimal stat investment.

Should I get Quick-Change Scroll or Power Pill first?

Quick-Change Scroll, without question. It is an insurance policy against death and far more valuable than a 15% damage buff. Power Pill is a nice luxury once you have spare Ninjutsu capacity, but Quick-Change should be your first priority in every build that invests in Dexterity.

Can I run a pure Ninjutsu build in Nioh 3?

Yes. Kusarigama or Claws with 50+ Dexterity and the Untouched Ninjutsu armor special effect is a strong endgame setup. You rely on thrown weapons for ranged damage, poison and paralysis for status pressure, and Quick-Change Scroll for survivability. See our Ninjutsu Kusarigama build guide for a complete loadout.
