Mikatagahara Map Overview
The Mikatagahara mission takes place across the open plains of Tōtōmi Province during the historical Battle of Mikatagahara. Unlike the tight corridors of earlier missions, Mikatagahara features wide battlefield areas mixed with fortified checkpoints and a crucible hazard zone.
From the first Shrine, the path moves northwest through a ruined supply camp. This is where you meet Hattori Hanzo, who provides context about the Tokugawa retreat. The camp contains 2 Kodama and several Gaki-type yokai. Follow the trail past the camp to reach the Mikatagahara Junction, a locked gate that blocks the main route forward.
To unlock the Mikatagahara Junction gate, you must clear the side path to the east, which leads to Yamagata Masakage's arena. A third Kodama is hidden behind breakable crates near the arena entrance. After defeating Masakage, interact with the gate mechanism to open the junction.
Past the junction, the Mikatagahara battlefield opens into a wide plains area dotted with burning siege equipment and crucible hazards. The crucible sections feature lava pools and instant-death smoke columns — stay on the raised stone paths and watch for the visual shimmer that signals smoke eruptions. Two more Kodama are along the edges of the plains.
The final stretch of Mikatagahara leads uphill toward the Takeda command post. NPC allies Ii Naotora and Honda Tadakatsu guard the last Shrine before the final boss arena. Two Kodama are placed along this uphill path, giving you 7 total across Mikatagahara.
Mikatagahara Enemies & Bosses
Mikatagahara is split into two enemy populations. The first half features yokai — primarily Gaki, Enki, and Yoki — around the supply camp and junction area. The second half, past the gate, shifts to a mix of human soldiers (Takeda cavalry) and yokai spawns near the crucible zones.
Boss 1: Yamagata Masakage
Yamagata Masakage is the mid-mission boss of Mikatagahara. He fights on horseback as a yokai-possessed cavalry commander. Masakage alternates between mounted charge attacks and dismounted sword combos. His weakness is Water element — apply Water talismans or use a Water-infused weapon to build up the Saturated status quickly. When Saturated, Masakage's Ki recovery drops and he staggers more easily. See our full Yamagata Masakage Boss Guide for a detailed moveset breakdown.
Boss 2: Takeda Shingen (Final Boss of Mikatagahara)
Takeda Shingen is the final boss of the Mikatagahara mission and one of the tougher fights in the mid-game. Shingen has three distinct phases. Phase 1 is a standard human-form fight with fan and war hammer combos. In Phase 2 at 65% HP, Shingen channels fire, gaining burning arena attacks and fire-coated strikes. Phase 3 triggers at 30% HP when he shifts to wind element, with faster movements and sweeping area attacks.
Poison is Shingen's primary weakness. Applying Poisoned status drains his HP continuously and reduces the effectiveness of his elemental transitions. Bring Ninjutsu poison shuriken or a Poison-affinity weapon for this Mikatagahara final boss. Our full Takeda Shingen Boss Guide covers all three phases in detail.
| Boss | Weakness | Drop | Phase Count |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yamagata Masakage | Water | Potsticker Spear | 2 (mounted/dismounted) |
| Takeda Shingen | Poison | Shingen's Fan | 3 (normal/fire/wind) |
Best Strategy for Mikatagahara
The most consistent strategy for Mikatagahara is a dual-element approach. Equip Water talismans for the first half of the mission and Yamagata Masakage, then switch to Poison consumables for Takeda Shingen. This covers both boss weaknesses without requiring weapon changes.
For the Mikatagahara crucible zones, stick to Mid Stance for its balanced dodge distance. The lava pools deal massive damage but have clear visual boundaries. The instant-death smoke columns erupt from specific vents every 8-10 seconds — count the rhythm and sprint between eruptions. Clearing the crucible quickly is better than fighting enemies inside it.
Before the Takeda Shingen fight, make sure your gear is at least +3 enhancement level. Mikatagahara is a noticeable difficulty spike from the previous mission (Futamata Castle). If your damage feels low, farm the Yoki loop near the first Shrine for Amrita before pushing forward.
During Shingen's Phase 2 fire transition on Mikatagahara, equip fire-resistant accessories or pop a Fire Resistance Talisman. His burning arena creates lingering patches that limit movement. Stay aggressive in Phase 3 — his wind attacks are faster but have narrow hitboxes that Mid Stance dodge can avoid consistently.
Mikatagahara Loot & Rewards
Completing the Mikatagahara mission unlocks several unique rewards that are not available elsewhere in Nioh 3. The mission completion reward pool scales with your current difficulty tier and includes both guaranteed drops and random loot.
| Reward | Source | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Potsticker Spear | Yamagata Masakage drop | Unique spear with Thrust Damage bonus |
| Shingen's Fan | Takeda Shingen drop | Accessory with Wind Resistance +15% |
| Samurai's Locks | Mission completion | Cosmetic hair item |
| Basket Blade smithing text | Takeda Shingen (rare drop) | Allows forging at Blacksmith |
| Boar Cutter smithing text | Takeda Shingen (rare drop) | Allows forging at Blacksmith |
| 7 Kodama blessings | Scattered across Mikatagahara | Adds to region Kodama count |
The smithing texts from Shingen are rare drops. If you need them, equip Item Drop Rate gear and replay the Mikatagahara mission on the highest difficulty you can handle. The Potsticker Spear is a guaranteed first-clear drop and cannot be farmed this way.
Mikatagahara Tips
- Talk to Hattori Hanzo at the supply camp for free consumables including 3 Water Talismans — save these for the Masakage fight later in Mikatagahara.
- The Mikatagahara Junction locked gate has a dark realm pocket behind it. Clear the dark realm first to avoid fighting in reduced Ki recovery on the other side.
- Ii Naotora near the final Shrine sells special arrows. Stock up on Roaring-Fire Arrows if you use a bow — they help with crowd control in the crucible battlefield zones of Mikatagahara.
- Bring at least 3 Antidotes for Takeda Shingen. His Phase 2 fire attacks can apply Scorched status, and Phase 3 wind attacks apply Blustered — both reduce your defense significantly.
- Kodama #5 and #6 on the Mikatagahara battlefield plains are behind burning wagon wreckage. Destroy the wagons to reveal the paths.
- If you are under-leveled for Mikatagahara, the Yoki near the first Shrine give roughly 2,800 Amrita each and respawn on rest. A few loops will close the gap.
- Sakakibara Yasumasa appears as an NPC summon near the Shingen arena. Summoning him makes the three-phase fight much more manageable on a first clear of Mikatagahara.
Mikatagahara FAQ
What level should I be for Nioh 3 Mikatagahara?
The recommended level for Mikatagahara is 43. You can clear it at lower levels, but Takeda Shingen's phase transitions hit very hard below 40. Gear level matters more than character level — prioritize +3 or higher weapons before entering Mikatagahara.
How many Kodama are in Mikatagahara?
There are 7 Kodama hidden throughout the Mikatagahara mission area. Three are found before the junction gate, two in the battlefield plains past the locked gate, and two more along the path leading to Takeda Shingen's boss arena.
How do I unlock the locked gate at Mikatagahara Junction?
The locked gate at Mikatagahara Junction requires you to defeat Yamagata Masakage in the side arena first. After beating him, interact with the mechanism near his arena exit to raise the gate and open the path to the battlefield plains.
Can I skip Yamagata Masakage in Mikatagahara?
No. Yamagata Masakage is a mandatory encounter in Mikatagahara. His defeat unlocks the junction gate that blocks the main path forward. You must beat him before you can reach Takeda Shingen.
